Rainfield, the connection is the tradition to give each other sweets and nuts that day. It's done in Germany and in Romania, I don't know about other countries. By giving each other sweets (usually secretly, as a surprise) people remember St. Nicholas who helped some poor girls by giving them some money so they could marry ... (that's a very short version of the legend....)
I've heard of St.Nicholas but this is the first time im hearing of this sweet tradition. I'm a buddhist so i dont know much abouth this. Is'nt Santa the same person? Anyway... cashew is my fav and we have lots of em in Sri Lanka :) Bythe way Im doing great and hope to post soon ....
