I tried very hard to link St. Nicholas' Day with the delicious pictures.
Rainfield, the connection is the tradition to give each other sweets and nuts that day. It's done in Germany and in Romania, I don't know about other countries.
By giving each other sweets (usually secretly, as a surprise) people remember St. Nicholas who helped some poor girls by giving them some money so they could marry ... (that's a very short version of the legend....)
I've heard of St.Nicholas but this is the first time im hearing of this sweet tradition. I'm a buddhist so i dont know much abouth this. Is'nt Santa the same person?
Anyway... cashew is my fav and we have lots of em in Sri Lanka :)
